University lecturer in theoretical philosophy (Turin University, 1964-2009), visiting professor at the American universities of Yale, Los Angeles, New York and the State University of New York. Member of the scientific committees of various Italian and foreign magazines; corresponding member of the Turin Academy of Sciences. Edited the 'Aesthetics Magazine'. Has been awarded honorary degrees by numerous universities worldwide. Leader writer for Italian and overseas newspapers. Vice-Chair (with Mario Soares) of the Academia da Latinidade, a non-governmental organisation for solidarity among Latin peoples and countries.
Member of the national executive of the Italia dei Valori party.
Former Member of the European Parliament (1999-2004) and member of the temporary committee on the 'Echelon' satellite interception system.
Former representative of Fuori (Italian Revolutionary Homosexual United Front) and memberof the national executive of the Homosexual Coordination group of the DS (Democrats of the Left) party.
