MEPs return to Strasbourg this week for the first time since the ceiling in the main debating chamber collapsed in early August. The French President will address the House on the outcome of last week's summit of EU leaders addressing the financial crisis and global warming. Meanwhile the new trade commissioner, Baroness Ashton, will be interviewed by the relevant standing committee before Parliament votes on her nomination on Wednesday.
 
The new generation ERASMUS MUNDUS programme will be approved by Parliament, ensuring a more even spread of foreign students participating and enough notice to obtain necessary visas for study.
 
The future of EU relations with Russia will also be debated, though there is little appetite to restart negotiations on an updated partnership agreement so soon after the Georgian conflict in the summer and with concerns over the poisoining of Anna Politkovskaya's lawyer in Strasbourg.
 
Finally ALDE will also be raising concerns over the installation of full body scanners at a number of EU airports. Whilst aiming to increase security by exposing hidden objects under clothing they do raise concerns for privacy of the majority of innocent travellers.
