European pension systems are under pressure from demographic ageing and diminishing resources of pension funds across Europe. From 2012, the working age population in Europe will begin to shrink, so urgent action is needed. Many Member States have been reforming their pension systems to varying degrees to meet these challenges, but the financial and economic crisis has made the situation more difficult and more urgent.
This ALDE seminar makes a contribution to the debate launched by the European Commission in its Green Paper on adequate, sustainable and safe pensions in July 2010.
What reforms are needed in order to ensure adequate standard of living in retirement? Should the EU define a retirement age or an adequate pension? How to increase mobility and portability of pensions while taking due account of constraints in some Member States? How do solvency rules apply to pension funds? Pensions as part of Stability and Growth Pact? What are the success stories to share? Can the EU play a bigger role by improving the current regulations?
These and many more questions will be addressed at this ALDE seminar. The three panels will gather experts from the EU institutions, academia, trade unions and pension fund companies across Europe. Please join us for a discussion!
Initiated by MEP Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE President
