ALDE: deal establishing European financial supervision a big step forwardOn September 22nd the EP approved with a large majority the establishment of an EU financial supervision. Guy Verhofstadt said: "I am very satisfied that today this long battle has ended with a positive result. It is worth recalling that it was ALDE that first called for the need for pan-European supervision.
Ramon Tremosa (CiU, Catalonia, Spain) EP rapporteur on the specific tasks of the ECB with respect to monitoring financial stability said "Parliament won the argument that the ECB President must also head the ESRB which will give greater credibility to the new bodies. With this reform, Mr Trichet is accountable also for financial stability in his hearings in the EP. EU - Korea FTA - ALDE warns Council not to force their handThe Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe supported the amendments to the regulation creating a bilateral safeguard clause to the EU free trade agreement between the EU and Korea without approving the legislative resolution in order to maintain leverage over the implementation of the provisional trade agreement itself. This is aimed at dissuading the Council from provisionally implementing the Free Trade Agreement without Parliament's

Ramon Tremosa (CiU, Catalonia)Ramon Tremosa (CiU, Catalonia) joined the European Parliament and the ALDE group in June 2009. He is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs with a specific interest in macroeconomics and in European monetary policy. In that capacity he has recently been involved in the establishment of a new European Supervisory Architecture - in particular as EP rapporteur on the role of the ECB in overseeing the new financial supervisory authorities.
As a substitute member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism, he is involved in the development of the Mediterranean rail freight corridor in the context of the broad review process of the trans-European transport network policy (TEN-T), as well as the liberalization of the Spanish ports and airports and bringing to an end the last remaining monopolies in the Spanish rail industry, both for passengers and freight transport.
As a Catalan MEP he takes a special interest in EU-Mediterranean Relations, geographically so important for his constituency and for Europe, through the Delegation for relations with Israel, and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean. He is also interested in Asian affairs from a trade and economic perspective and is a full member of the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China.
Mr. Tremosa has a PhD in Economics from the University of Barcelona (UB) and specialised in Applied Economic Analysis and Economic Theory, a subject he has been teaching since 2002. Interested in regional economy and monetary policy, he has published several articles in national as well as international academic journals. He is the author of different books on Catalan economic policy, the most recent being "Catalonia, an Emerging Economy". He was also a visiting professor at the London School of Economics before being elected to the EP.
