ALDE Campaign against Human Trafficking and Child Sexual Abuse
Every year an estimated amount of well-over two million people, mostly women and children fall victim of human trafficking and sexual abuse. Today it has become a modern form of slavery in the world.
The Members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament are deeply concerned about human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children all around the EU and worldwide. Liberals and Democrats do care about it and are willing to help the EU to fight against it by continuing its campaign Against Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children following the first stage started at the end of 2007.
Therefore, ALDE group:
The statistics on human trafficking, including children trafficking and sexual abuse, are still shocking. Different inquiries show that situation in Europe and worldwide over the years has not improved. According to Europol, human trafficking is one of the most profitable activities of organised crime in Europe. It is both a serious crime and an abuse of human rights perpetrated against some of the most vulnerable individuals - children.
An estimated 250,000 women and children from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are transported each year to other countries, including the United States. Based on UNICEF data around 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, within countries as well as across borders. Worldwide 1.8 million children are being abused in the sex industry for profit. They are forced by adults into prostitution, the pornography industries and sex tourism.
Liberals and Democrats, on behalf of all the liberal parties in the EU, invite you not to stand aside when the EU is putting its efforts together to defend its women, children and men from this modern form of slavery.
