Copenhagen: EU must act now
16/12/2009
Lena Ek MEP (Sweden, Centre Party) ALDE Spokesperson on Industry, Research and Energy and ALDE Environment Spokesman Chris Davies MEP (UK, Liberal Democrats) have returned from the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference and urged EU leaders to show clarity and leadership in the quest to cut global carbon emissions.
Ek, who will return to Copenhagen for the final days of the Conference said:
Chris Davies MEPNo muss, no fuss - just real action now
"To reach a deal we need three things above all: China must start reporting; America must start financing; and the EU must be committing to a 30% cut in emissions by 2020. No muss, no fuss - just real action now."
Davies warned that the new Commission must work together if the EU is to maintain its claim to leadership on climate change:
"Words about sustainability and the 'green agenda' are easy, but for them to be put into practice will require a degree of partnership and common purpose that looks unlikely given the names of those nominated for key Commission briefs.
"It will take commitment, enthusiasm and resources to meet the vital task of cutting our carbon emissions by at least 30%. In the Commission hearings in January we must put pressure on the nominees to show that they have the will to bring about the changes needed."
