Acknowledging the difficulty in obtaining support for a tough UN resolution, Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE Leader calls for the EU and the US to show leadership and be united in their call for Al-Assad's regime to stop the slaughter of Syrian population.

"1300 people have died on the streets of Syria so far and the people now fear a major military assault on the northern town of  Jisr al-Shughour . Yet the International Community has remained equivocal in face of the looming humanitarian disaster.

The European Union should launch a concerted effort with the US  to introduce tougher sanctions and steer through a strong UN resolution."

"We must send a strong message of support to the Syrian democracy movement - and this will not be through a weak UN Resolution which sends signals to  al-Assad that he can  continue his brutal slaughter with impunity.  Our message should be clear: Al Assad the world is watching  and you  have lost your legitimacy to govern."
