SEMINAR: PLASTICS & OUR OCEANS - A THREAT TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

22/06/2010
Event dates: Tuesday 22 June 2010 13:00
Location: BE BRUSSELS P4B001

Plastic can be seen floating on all the world's oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch may contain as much as 100 million tons of plastic debris, and could represent up to 8% of the size of the Pacific Ocean. Plastic garbage is an increasing problem in the North East Atlantic as well. Plastic eventually enters the food chain as animals confuse debris with food, which may cause serious health problems.

This seminar aims to highlight the increasing concern of plastic garbage originating from land-based sources as well as maritime sources. An exchange of views with Parliament, Commission and stakeholders will help shape recommendations for potential actions to take at an EU level.
