Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament are calling on Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship to launch an assessment of the newly adopted Hungarian constitution, to ensure that the text does not contradict the basic European values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights.

Guy Verhofstadt, President of the Liberal and Democrat group said:

"The Commission has a duty to act in case of any incompatibility between national legislation and the values listed in the Treaty of the European Union – a duty recently affirmed by Commission President Mr Barroso in reply to my question in Strasbourg earlier this month. As the Hungarian Prime Minister has already indicated his willingness to provide the text for consideration by the Commission, there should be no further obstacle for the examination to start as soon as possible."
