Today marks the official launch in Rabat of negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement (CAFTA) between the EU and Morocco, Marielle DE SARNEZ (Modem, France), rapporteur for EU trade relations with the Maghreb, said:
"These trade negotiations are highly symbolic. They further deepen the close relationship between the EU and Morocco. They are also a sign that Europe remains a major economic partner for Morocco, two years after the beginning of major reforms in the country. The conclusion of such an agreement should facilitate trade and investment between Morocco and the European Union, allowing harmonisation of Moroccan and European legislation in many areas, particularly in energy, services and public procurement. We also hope that this agreement will lead to renewed democratic progress in Morocco.
These negotiations must be conducted in compliance with Moroccan and European priorities. The opening of the Moroccan market to European agri-food products should not affect the viability of the Moroccan fisheries and agriculture which are vital for the economic development of this country. Conversely, while the European agricultural producers adhere to strict environmental, social and health standards, it is essential that future agreements include provisions that ensure Moroccan products entering the European market comply with equivalent standards.
Smooth negotiations of the free trade agreement are crucial because they serve as an example for other countries in the southern Mediterranean. This agreement will also allow in the long term, greater regional integration for the Maghreb countries. Finally, it is necessary that the European Parliament be more involved in the trade negotiations led by the Commission so it can give its opinion on specific aspects before having to give assent to the final agreement. "
