SEMINAR: ANIMAL WELFARE = HUMAN WELFARE ?

04/02/2010
Event date: Thursday 04 February 2010
Location: BE BRUSSELS P4B001

The main aim of this seminar is to have a broad discussion on animal welfare from an economic and scientific point of view.

Potential issues to be raised:

  • Good animal husbandry - good for business!
  • Antibiotic resistance - a concern for all?
  • Science-based indicators - better than traditional legislation?
  • Incentives for enforcement?

Background:

A good animal husbandry is good for business! It is good for the economy and wellbeing of the single farmer but also a vital factor for public health (antibiotic resistance is a terrible threat to both humans and animals). The question is therefore how to find incentives - financial and other - for the farmers to make use of the latest science.

In its resolution of 12 October 2006 on the Animal Welfare Action Plan 2006-2010, the European Parliament called on the Commission to complete the development of, and research into, integrated animal protection indicators within three years.

Through the "Animal Welfare Quality Project", research on animal welfare indicators has now been well developed. The project will deliver its final results around April 2010 and has covered the protection of farm animals on farm and at slaughter. Further research is needed for transport as well as other species.
